Kentucky fire fighters with out of state certifications that carry IFSAC or ProBoard accreditation may request to have those certifications recognized in Kentucky through RECIPROCITY. We recognize certificates that includes a numbered seal of accreditation by IFSAC or NPQB, no matter what state, province or country issues the certification.

Kentucky can only honor certificates for levels to which Kentucky itself is accredited. See our accredited certification levels at http://www.kyffcert.com/id12.html

Kentucky does NOT convert out-of-state certificates to Kentucky certificates, nor are ProBoard certs converted to IFSAC certs and vice-versa.

Reciprocity means that we will recognize, on a case-by-case basis, certifications outside our state for the following purposes:

1. To allow a Kentucky fire fighter to seek additional certifications by using the out of state cert as a pre-requisite to obtain such, and

2. To allow a Kentucky fire fighter to obtain Kentucky statutory certification (150 hr or 400 hr levels) to permit a volunteer FD to qualify for state aid OR a career fire fighter to qualify for incentive pay.

To acquire reciprocity, an Application for Accredited Certification Reciprocity must be filed for each level of certification requested.

Kentucky DOES NOT recognize "Grandfathered" or "Implied" certifications.

There is a fifteen dollar ($15.00) application fee for each reciprocal certification requested, for research and processing.
Fee shall accompany each application, in the form of money order or department check, made payable to KCTCS-Fire Commission.
Personal checks or cash are NOT accepted.

Each certificate honored under reciprocity, shall entitle the fire fighter to two(2) certified copies of a Kentucky Certificate of Reciprocity for the certification level, such as Firefighter 1, Free of Charge.
